Zeitgenössische Kunst in Auseinandersetzung mit Kunstraub / Appropriation / Werteverschiebung

Eine künstlerische Herangehensweise an das Thema "Kunst als Beute, Beute als Kunst" bietet die Chance, eine politisch heikle, weil mit Restitutionsansprüchen behaftete Frage aus der Zone eingespielter Reflexe heraus, einer offenen Bearbeitung entgegenzuführen. Der gewählte Ort, das Gut Holzdorf und seine spezifische Geschichte, nämlich einst eine der umfassendsten Privatsammlungen von über hundert Werken französischer Impressionisten beherbergt zu haben, ist Kern der Auseinandersetzung. (Die Sammlung Krebs wurde 1995 zum Teil in der St. Petersburger Eremitage wieder dem Publikum zugänglich gemacht.)

Die Abwesenheit bedeutender Kunstwerke charakterisiert diesen Ort heute. Zeitgenössische Künstler/innen laden diese "Leerstellen" mit Bedeutungen auf, die mehr sind als eine Klage über die fehlenden Werke. Die temporäre Anwesenheit vor Ort wird nun dazu verwendet, der Abwesenheit der Werke eine diskutable, primär künstlerische Form zu verleihen.

An artistic approach to the theme "Art as Loot, Loot as Art" offers the chance to openly address a politically sensitive issue, which is tainted with claims for restitution, from the zone of established reflexes. The idea was to question, by the means of contemporary art and in confrontation with historical loot, appropriation and value shift of art pieces.

The chosen location, the Holzdorf estate and its specific history, namely to have once housed one of the most comprehensive private collections of over one hundred works by French Impressionists, is the core of the debate. The Krebs Collection was partially reopened to the public in 1995 in the St. Petersburg Hermitage.

The absence of important works of art characterizes this place today. Contemporary artists charge these "empty spaces" with meanings that are more than a lament about the missing works. The temporary presence on site is now used to give the absence of the works a discernible, primarily artistic form.
