Die Ausstellung zeigt eine Auswahl von Fotografien der Atelierfotografin Charlotte Mathesie, die von 1945 bis 1990 in Berlin-Kreuzberg tätig war. Dem Auftrag des Studios entsprechend, handelt es sich in der Hauptsache um Portraitfotos - vom Paß - bis zum Hochzeits- und Erinnerungsbild - aber auch um Tierportraits, Werbefotografien und andere Aufnahmen. Die Fotografien wurden von einer Arbeitsgruppe mit dem Soziologen Stéphane Bauer, der Künstlerin Katharina Hohmann, dem Kunsthistoriker Peter Funken und der Designerin Helga Lieser als Enzyklopädie geordnet, die insgesamt ca. 100 Begriffe umfasst. Diese Ordnungspunkte, nach subjektiven Kriterien ausgewählt, beginnen mit ‚Abwesenheit’ (des Vater nach dem Krieg), über ‚Augen zu’, ‚Beruf / Berufung’, ‚Cowboys und Indianer’, ‚Feste, Feiern, Feten’, ‚Initiation’, ‚Mode’, ‚Partnerlook’‚ ’Seitenwechsel’, ... bis zu ‚Zwillinge’.
Die Neuordung des müllgewordenen Archivs möchte dazu anregen und anleiten, das Fotomaterial unter zeitgenössischen Aspekten zu besichtigen, und stellt dabei Fragen nach Zeit- und Sozialgeschichte, Alltagskultur, Ästhetik und Moden aber auch nach Archiv und Sammlung. Fotografie ist im Sinne der Ausstellung ein Chronometer, das dazu verhilft, am sozialen und kulturellen Geschehen teilzunehmen. Hinter den sich wandelnden Moden und Gesten, hinter den Einrichtungsgegenständen und Motiven wird eine sich verändernde soziale Struktur erkennbar.

Based on the estate of the Kreuzberg Photo Studio Mathesie, which was dissolved in 1993, an interdisciplinary working group of the NGBK, Berlin, has been working on an exhibition and a publication. About 500,000 photo negatives – from 1945 to 1993 – were viewed and discussed for more than a year. The exhibition showed around 5000 photographs, arranged according to 120 subjects and according to necessities that resulted from the discussions during the study. The selection was digitally printed on plotter tracks using modern technology, and allowed an open viewing. The exhibition was subsequently shown at several institutions, and from 2000 - 2008 the show traveled around the world with the Goethe Institute. Numerous newspaper articles were published, among others, the weekly magazines from Die Zeit and Süddeutsche Zeitung published excerpts from the photo collection. The exhibition showed a selection of photographs by studio photographer Charlotte Mathesie, who worked in Berlin-Kreuzberg from 1945 to 1990. In accordance with the studio's mission, the main focus is on portrait photography - from passport photos to wedding and souvenir photos - but also on animal portraits or advertising. The photographs were arranged as an encyclopedia, containing about 100 subjects. These topics, selected according to our subjective criteria, begin with 'Absence' (of the father after the war), followed by 'Eyes closed', 'Professions, 'Cowboys and Indians', 'Celebrations, Parties', 'Initiation', 'Fashion', 'Partner look', 'Changing sides', ... up to 'Twins'. The re-organization of the archive, which was about to be thrown away, is intended to encourage and guide visitors to view the photographic material from a contemporary perspective, asking questions about contemporary and social history, everyday culture, aesthetics and fashions, but also about the notion of archive and collection. In the sense of the exhibition, photography is a chronometer that helps to take part in the social and cultural every-day life. Behind the changing fashions and gestures, behind the furnishings and motifs, a changing social structure becomes apparent.
